August 08 • Light-Hearted

Day 395

Recovery is hard work. It can also be "fun," every now and then.

When I started the program, there were several "promises" that I thought were ludicrous, even impossible. Still, I felt that enough of them were within reach that it seemed a better option than just, well, killing myself by whatever means.

Then I began seeing the lights coming on. Some were the lights of an oncoming train that required significant shifts in directions, but many were flickering candles of hope and surprise that life could be good again; there was light where only darkness had been.

The promises are real, whether or not they are believed. I've not realized them all, but I have seen them all realized in others, and some in myself. That's enough for today. That's enough to hope for a better tomorrow. That's enough to believe.

There is a candle in every soul

Some brightly burning, some dark and cold

There is a Spirit who brings fire

Ignites a candle and makes His home

–Kathy Troccoli, ”Go Light Your World"
